Import PGP Keys

Import existing PGP keys to maintain compatibility with your existing encrypted communications

Why Import PGP Keys?
If you already have PGP keys from other email providers or tools, you can import them to maintain continuity

Importing your existing PGP keys allows you to:

  • Continue using the same public key for encrypted communications
  • Decrypt messages sent to your old key
  • Maintain your key fingerprint and identity
  • Avoid re-sharing your public key with contacts
How to Import

Step 1: Export your PGP key from your current provider

• For Gmail: Use a PGP extension or tool to export your private key

• For ProtonMail: Go to Settings → Encryption → Export Private Key

• For other providers: Use GPG command line or your key management tool

Step 2: Go to SipherMail Settings

Navigate to Settings → Encryption → Import Keys

Step 3: Upload your key file

• Select your private key file (.asc, .gpg, or .key format)

• Enter your key passphrase if required

• Confirm the import

Security Note: Your private key is encrypted at rest and never leaves our secure servers. Only you can decrypt messages with your imported key.

Key Formats Supported
  • .asc - ASCII armored PGP key
  • .gpg - Binary GPG key
  • .key - Generic key file
  • .pem - PEM format (if compatible)

Both public and private keys are supported. Private keys require your passphrase for security.

Troubleshooting

Key import failed

  • Verify the key file is not corrupted
  • Check that you're using the correct passphrase
  • Ensure the key format is supported

Can't decrypt old messages

  • Make sure you imported the correct private key
  • Verify the key matches the one used to encrypt the messages
  • Check that the key hasn't expired or been revoked
