Account Recovery Methods

Set up multiple ways to recover your account if you lose access

Why Set Up Recovery Methods?
Multiple recovery methods ensure you can always regain access to your account

If you forget your password or lose access to your 2FA device, recovery methods are your backup plan:

  • Recovery email address
  • Recovery phone number (SMS)
  • Recovery codes (for 2FA)
  • Security questions (if enabled)
Recovery Email

A recovery email is a secondary email address where we can send account recovery instructions.

Setting up:

  1. Go to Settings → Security → Recovery Methods
  2. Click "Add Recovery Email"
  3. Enter a secondary email address (not your main SipherMail address)
  4. Verify the email by clicking the confirmation link sent to that address

Tip: Use an email address you check regularly and that you're unlikely to lose access to.

Recovery Phone Number

A recovery phone number allows us to send SMS codes for account recovery.

Setting up:

  1. Go to Settings → Security → Recovery Methods
  2. Click "Add Phone Number"
  3. Enter your phone number (include country code)
  4. Verify by entering the code sent via SMS

Note: Keep your phone number updated. If you change numbers, update it immediately in settings.

Using Recovery Methods

If you forgot your password:

  1. Go to the login page and click "Forgot Password"
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Choose a recovery method (email or SMS)
  4. Enter the code sent to your recovery method
  5. Set a new password

If you lost your 2FA device:

  1. Use a recovery code you saved when setting up 2FA
  2. Or use your recovery email/phone to verify identity
  3. Disable 2FA and set it up again with a new device
Best Practices

Multiple Methods

Set up at least 2 recovery methods to ensure you always have a backup option.

Keep Updated

Regularly verify your recovery methods are still accessible and update them if they change.

Secure Storage

Store recovery codes in a password manager or secure physical location.
