Stopping Spam & Outgoing Abuse

How SipherMail protects against spam and abuse

Protection Overview

SipherMail implements multiple layers of protection to prevent spam and abuse:

  • Blocklists: Admins can block specific email addresses or entire domains from sending
  • Rate Limits: Configurable daily and hourly send limits per user or organization
  • Trusted Senders: High-volume legitimate senders can be whitelisted with higher limits
  • Automatic Monitoring: System tracks send statistics and enforces limits automatically
How Send Limits Work

SipherMail enforces send limits to prevent abuse while allowing legitimate high-volume senders:

Default Limits

By default, users have reasonable send limits (e.g., 1000 messages per day, 100 per hour). These limits can be adjusted by administrators.

What Happens When Limits Are Exceeded

If you exceed your send limit, you'll receive an error message when trying to send. The limit resets at the start of the next hour (for hourly limits) or day (for daily limits).

Trusted Senders

Legitimate high-volume senders (e.g., marketing teams, transactional email services) can be marked as "trusted" by administrators, which bypasses send limits entirely.

Blocked Senders & Domains

Administrators can block specific email addresses or entire domains from sending emails:

Address-level blocks: Block a specific email address (e.g., spammer@example.com)

Domain-level blocks: Block an entire domain (e.g., example.com blocks all @example.com addresses)

Scope: Blocks can be applied globally, to specific organizations, or to individual users

Note: If your account is blocked, you'll see an error message when trying to send. Contact support to resolve block issues.

For Administrators

Administrators can manage abuse protection settings:

  1. Go to Admin → Security → Abuse Protection
  2. View and manage blocked senders/domains
  3. Configure send limits for users or organizations
  4. Mark legitimate senders as "trusted" to bypass limits
  5. Monitor send statistics and abuse patterns
Best Practices for Legitimate Senders

If you're sending legitimate high-volume emails (marketing, transactional, etc.):

  • • Use double opt-in for marketing emails
  • • Maintain low bounce rates (<5%)
  • • Include clear unsubscribe links
  • • Monitor your sending reputation
  • • Contact support to request higher limits or trusted sender status

Contact Support: For verified business accounts with legitimate high-volume needs, contact support to discuss custom send limits or trusted sender status.
